I heart Seattle

March 31, 2010

I had a recent trip with the BYU mens lacrosse team to Seattle, Washington for some games a week or so ago. Let me start by saying as much as I love Denver and hope to someday live there again, Seattle might be right up there in places I would absolutely love to live. It is beautiful! Yes it rains, a lot, I understand that, however if you are a Colorado native and love the mountains and love rain then this may just be a good place to go… Outside the city reminds me of Silverthorne, Colorado with much much bigger pine trees, more water (both on the ground and in the sky), and much greener. Not to mention more people, a big city twenty minutes away, and the ocean hours away.  It is sounding like a fun place to end up for a couple years..

We had a few hours to wander the Pike Place market while we were there, it was fun to see how different it is then Utah (and even Colorado for that matter.) Of course I have seen little marketplaces here and there with fruit and vegetables but nothing like this where they are literally bringing fresh fish in from the ocean right then and there. I love seafood, and we dined at this tiny little restaurant that had some awesome fish and chips we found tucked back in the market. What a great change of scenery!

Oh and for those that just might be interested in the lacrosse photos done while I was there, you may view them here!

Brooke

Ahh trades, I love trades. My sister in law moved back to Denver a few months ago and therefore left me without a hair stylist. Darn you Kali. I am kinda funny about my hair, while I would rather not spend $35+ on a haircut (especially at the speed my hair grows) I have learned from past experiences that just running down to the local Great Clips is a 50/50 shot that I am walking out of there with a decent looking hair style. Actually the last time I did I left with 4 inches taken off and 3 of those were trying to fix it. I was not a happy camper especially since I feel weird if it is too short. So since then I started having my sister in law do it even though she was still finishing up hair school she did a fantastic job. Then she moved.

BUT lucky for me a friend of ours started dating this super awesome girl named Brooke, and we became really good friends, and Brooke cuts hair! Awesome! So we decided to trade out a photoshoot for some hair cutting. Why do we need money when we can just trade things? This is Brook’s shoot, there will probably be a part two to this because of course the day we go to take pictures it turned out to be freezing cold and windy. Maybe we will do some in more summery attire, with things like green grass and trees and flowers…. can you tell I want winter to be over!?

I am way excited to share this with everyone. These past few months I have been working hard on a website for artist Dix Baines who is a fine art oil painter located in Parker, Colorado featuring western landscapes, architecture, and angling images. He wanted a site that would showcase his work, yet at the same time be more modern and functional for prospective clients and keep everyone updated on everything he is currently working on.

There are some really cool areas of this site, one in particular that I believe is my favorite, is a journal that documents the time he spent painting the landscape around Gateway Canyons in Colorado. The thing that really sets this section of his site apart is the personal side of the artist that you’re able to discover. A lot of times we never really get to know the artist and what was honestly going on in their mind while they were working. And let me assure you, an artist’s brain is full of so many ideas and thoughts running through it at once that a pen and paper is probably the only way to keep everything straight. Another thing I love, his handwriting. It is a work of art in itself, to see the scribbles and sketches he did before any of the actual painting happened is fantastic. This journal documents his experience from Summer 2007 through Spring 2008 and I highly recommend heading over and checking it out here.

For those that are located in Colorado and interested in creating, discussing, and just enjoying art, Dix offers Art Nights which are weekly gatherings on Thursday Evenings in his studio for all levels of artist, and for all media. Please visit www.dixbaines.com for more information and follow Dix on facebook to stay up to date on what he is doing!
